Roanoke Times newspaper article, Sunday, April 26, 2009 (today!), by Dan Casey
“…It wasn’t that long ago in the humble Roanoke Valley that bicyclists fell into two categories: spandex-clad weirdos who were Not To Be Taken Seriously, or the homeless, who were mostly ignored.
…Lately that attitude has changed in a profound way. Suddenly, bicycling is hip and cool and Roanoke is developing a much more diverse bike culture.
…Librarian (note: i’m not a libarian! river)-cyclist River Laker, aka “The Carless Brit,” has captured the imagination of Roanokers young and old with his six-month vow to forsake the stinky automobile. Laker hit the three-month mark April 14, and scores of people squeezed into the downtown library for a party to celebrate with him.

‘well done, Gilee! You’ll relax viewing the art at the next stop on the Open Studios of Roanoke Tour!
‘almost at the top of the hill and close to the next house on the Open Studios of Roanoke tour.
‘we decided to walk for a bit for some variety going up a hill on the Open Studios of Roanoke self-guided tour!
And I never even knew my buddy, Sal, had just the one leg until today when we went biking on the Greenway!
Well, I suppose then he had just the one leg, but now he clearly has two legs, as the photo taken seconds after the one legged version shows, and as I thought he had all the time I knew him until we went biking today!
I know biking brings on all types of amazing positive effects, and I believe miracles do happen, but this?!
‘look at all these little bikers getting ready to ride on the Roanoke Valley Greenway this afternoon!
The Greenway today was packed with bikers of all ages, so nice to see!
…some of the benefits from cycling “everywhere, always”.
…how wonderful it is to feel connected to the seasons and the weather everyday by being out on the road.
…the simple delights of a cool (or warm!) breeze blowing over you as you skim along the streets, and how pedaling down these streets allows me to see and hear so much more then when I drove (I feel more connected to my neighborhood and local community).
…how good it feels to NOT be burning gasoline and therefore to NOT be contributing (in a small way) to the demise of our environment (not to mention removing oneself just a bit from being a part of the global geopolitical oil producing/consuming machine).
…most do not hear me speak of how great I feel from the exercise I am getting by cycling everywhere. They might not know what it is like to never have to worry about parking, or they don’t know how great it is to save well over a thousand dollars every year because I do not own a car and commute to work. I even believe, dare I say it, that cycling help keeps me young(er) both in mind and body.If most of us biked instead of driving a car we would literally change the world. Yes it would require planning and different choices, but in my experience the benefits far outweigh the costs. Come join me!
— Dan, from Richmond, recently posted this note on Facebook. I thought it summed up many of the great reasons for riding a bike for daily transportation instead of using a car, the ‘normal’ transportation method. Thanks, Dan, for permission to post it here, River.
